I recently asked the question on Instagram – “what do you do to get through a reading slump?” – and I received a lot of useful replies: “read something you normally wouldn’t read”, or “re-read one of your all-time favourites” were among the best. But when I’m stuck, I always refer back to Austin Kleon’s tips to form better reading habits. And a lot of them overlap with some of the answers I received on Instagram and Facebook, so you’re all on the right track!
For me “schedule one hour a day for reading on your calendar like you would an important meeting” is the best place to start. You’ll be surprised at how this consistency helps you burn through books. Obviously our lives can get very busy, but if you make it official on a calendar, you’re more likely to avoid scheduling anything else. More so, this keeps the ball rolling and you’re less likely to get into a slump.
I’m a bit of a night owl, but I made a point of getting into bed an hour earlier and scheduling my reading time for then. It works! This also prevented me from spending my time on Instagram before bed. I didn’t throw my phone into the ocean, because I couldn’t find one in Johannesburg, but instead I bought an app called Forest that keeps me off my phone in the most imaginative way. The Book Case means I have to get through a lot of books. I pride myself on the book choices we finally decide to feature in our cases, and you’ve seen that we don’t always choose the most obvious. So this is important to me. And I have to get through everything the publishers send to me so that I can make an informed decision. But I don’t put pressure on myself. In fact, I really dislike those reading challenges on social media. You’re supposed to be reading for enjoyment. It doesn’t make you more credible if you read 100 books in a year. I digress.
